UTVs are highly powerful and useful machines in a number of situations. Whether you use your UTV for work, recreation, or both, these beastly vehicles prove their worth with every maneuver. Maybe you need your UTV to haul workers and their heavy equipment across a job site. Perhaps you turn to your UTV on the weekends when you need to blow off some steam on the trails. Either way, these vehicles will serve you well. It’s important not to overlook safety when using your UTV. Although they drive like cars and come with seatbelts, the open air design still puts you in harm’s way. Therefore, it’s essential that you invest in a UTV helmet.

At Holzhauer Pro Motorsports, your safety is our priority. We’ve gathered the basics on UTV helmets below. If you have questions or want to check out what we have to offer before your next ride, stop by our dealership. We’re located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, in Nashville, Illinois. We proudly serve Carbondale, Mount Vernon, and Salem, Illinois.

Why Wear A Helmet?

If you’re new to the world of UTVs, you’re probably asking yourself why you even need to wear a helmet. As tough as they might be, UTVs are not totally indestructible. As a rider, you’re not well protected inside a UTV because you lack full enclosure of metal and other material that a standard vehicle provides. UTVs often come with a rollover protection cage, which is designed to protect the UTV more than the ride. Considering all the rough riding you’ll be doing on various types of terrain, you should absolutely invest in a helmet and so should your passengers. You’ll feel better knowing you have protection from traumatic brain injuries in case of an impact.

Types of Helmets

While there aren’t many UTV-specific helmets on the market, there are still plenty of other options that’ll serve you well. Keep in mind that your helmet will need to hold up against debris and rough terrain. Certain helmets offer more protection than others. For example, you should avoid half helmets. These might be suitable for bike riding but they won’t provide the full protection you need when riding in a UTV.

You’ll want to invest in a helmet that’s going to offer head, neck, and face protection. Many motorcycle helmets come with face shields, which can work well for UTV riding. These helmets tend to be a bit heavier and less breathable, though. If you ride in the summer, this type of helmet won’t be very comfortable. Your best option is a motocross helmet, which offers the protection you need in a breathable and lightweight design so you can enjoy the ride. These are made to withstand high-impact collisions so you’ll have maximum protection.

Fit & Comfort

In addition to finding a helmet that offers the best protection, you’ll also want to make sure it fits right and feels comfortable. Every manufacturer has its own way of determining sizes, so a helmet that fits in a certain size from one brand might be the same with another brand. You should always refer to a manufacturer’s sizing chart to help determine what will work best. Use a tailor’s measuring tape to get your head measurements. Measure the circumference of your head an inch above your eyebrows.

Confirm your helmet fits properly and comfortable. Tighten the chin strap and shake your head a bit. If you feel a lot of wiggling and extra room, you need to go down a size. See if the helmet slides off without undoing the strap. If so, you need a smaller size. If you can fit a finger between your forehead and the helmet, it’s too large. Size is key to finding the right helmet so your best bet is to try them on in person .

Goggles or Face Mask?

After you’ve decided on helmet style and size, you’ll need to choose between goggles and a face mask. Some helmets come with a built-in face mask. Motocross helmets are usually designed to accommodate goggles. The advantage of buying your goggles separately is you can choose the ones that fit your eyes correctly and have the features you want. For example, you might want anti-fogging lenses, UV filtering, and plenty of ventilation. You can go with a face mask for more seamless protection, but you’ll sacrifice the anti-fogging feature.
